Autoimmune Conditions

overview

Living with an autoimmune condition can feel unpredictable. Our approach centers on care and strategies that help you feel stronger and more capable.

At Citrus, we use evidence-based exercise therapy and individualised programming to meet you where you are, whether that means tackling joint pain, fatigue, or the ups and downs of autoimmune symptoms. We work with you to make progress and find ways to work with your body, not against it.

Autoimmune Conditions and Symptoms

RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS (RA)

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic systemic autoimmune disease where the immune system mistakenly targets the lining of the joints, causing ongoing inflammation. Over time, that inflammation can affect joint stability, strength, and overall health and wellbeing.

Exercise-based rehabilitation helps reduce joint pain, improve joint stability, maintain range of motion, and preserve muscle mass that protects vulnerable joints. It also supports cardiovascular health and can help reduce systemic inflammation.

COMMON SYMPTOMS

Pain & tenderness Swelling Morning stiffness Reduced range of motion Symmetrical joint pain Fatigue

POSTURAL ORTHOSTATIC TACHYCARDIA SYNDROME (POTS)

POTS affects the autonomic nervous system, which regulates heart rate and blood pressure. A common scenario is when moving from lying down to standing, your heart rate spikes dramatically, making you feel dizzy and foggy.

Through exercise, you can increase tolerance. With carefully structured programming, we gradually build capacity, enhance venous return (the rate of blood flow back to your heart), and improve autonomic regulation. The goal is not to push through symptoms, but to expand what your body can handle over time.

COMMON SYMPTOMS

Rapid heart rate on standing Heart palpitations Lightheadedness or dizziness Near-fainting Severe fatigue Exercise intolerance Brain fog Blood pooling in legs

HASHIMOTO’S DISEASE

Hashimoto’s is a chronic condition where the immune system attacks the thyroid gland, often leading to reduced thyroid hormone production (hypothyroidism). It can feel like your internal engine is idling when you want it to move.

Structured exercise supports metabolism, energy levels, insulin function, and muscle preservation.  It reduces cardiovascular risk, which can be higher in untreated hypothyroidism. You may also feel lighter in mood and sharper in thinking, helping counter the “slowed down” feeling.

COMMON SYMPTOMS

Fatigue Muscle weakness Joint stiffness Brain fog Low mood Weight gain Cold intolerance Dry skin thinning hair Irregular periods

HYPERTHYROIDISM

Hyperthyroidism is when the thyroid produces excessive thyroid hormones, accelerating metabolism. The body moves into overdrive, appetite increases, heart rate climbs, and heat intolerance increases.

Exercise, when appropriately dosed, helps manage muscle weakness, support bone density (as excess thyroid hormone can accelerate bone loss), improve cardiovascular fitness, and regulate mood. The aim is controlled, structured training that stabilises rather than overstimulates.

COMMON SYMPTOMS

Weight loss Increased appetite Heat intolerance Excessive sweating Heart palpitations Rapid resting heart rate Elevated blood pressure Anxiety Irritability Tremors Difficulty sleeping Muscle weakness

CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME

Chronic fatigue is not just tiredness. It is profound exhaustion that isn’t helped by rest and can worsen after exertion. Evidence-based exercise helps to maintain mitochondrial efficiency, so that your cells produce energy more effectively. It also helps regulate your heart rate and blood pressure responses and prevents deconditioning. Because energy feels limited and pushing past it can backfire, we carefully individualise your program.

COMMON SYMPTOMS

Severe fatigue Post-exertional malaise Brain fog Muscle aches Joint pain Headaches

LUPUS

Lupus is an autoimmune condition in which the immune system attacks healthy tissues, leading to systemic inflammation and multi-organ involvement. Symptoms often fluctuate, with periods of relative calm and flares.

Tailored exercise supports cardiovascular health; particularly important given elevated risk in lupus. It helps maintain muscle mass, especially during steroid use, supports bone density, and reduces fatigue and even systemic inflammation markers.

COMMON TRIGGERS

Joint pain and swelling Fatigue Muscle aches Skin sensitivity Brain fog Low-grade fevers Kidney inflammation General discomfort

How We Can Help

Our approach to treating autoimmune conditions is based on evidence-based exercise therapy, with a psychosocial lens that recognises the interplay between physical health, mental wellbeing, and lived experience. We tailor your program based on your condition, movement patterns, and daily demands, so that it feels relevant and progressive.
