Cardiovascular Conditions

overview

The heart is at the centre of cardiovascular health, and movement is at the heart of how we support it.

Evidence consistently shows that exercise lowers blood pressure and benefits heart health in conditions like hypertension, coronary artery disease, and atrial fibrillation. It is also a key part of rehabilitation after cardiac procedures. At Citrus, we tailor your exercise therapy to start where you are and set you up to move and live with greater capacity.

Cardiovascular Conditions and Symptoms

HYPERTENSION

Hypertension is persistently high blood pressure; over time, it puts extra strain on your heart and blood vessels. The increased pressure can damage arteries and contribute to conditions like heart disease, stroke, and kidney problems.

Regular exercise is highly effective; research shows average reductions in systolic blood pressure of around 5–10 mmHg. Movement helps blood vessels become more flexible and reduces resistance so blood flows more easily. It also improves how the heart pumps and responds to activity, lowering cardiovascular risk over time.

COMMON SYMPTOMS

Headaches Dizziness Shortness of breath Blurred vision Severe Nosebleeds Chest discomfort

CORONARY ARTERY DISEASE (CAD)

CAD is when the arteries that supply blood to the heart become narrowed or blocked by a build-up of plaque (fat, cholesterol, and inflammatory material). That narrowing reduces blood flow and oxygen to the heart muscle, causing chest pain and shortness of breath. It also increases the risk of heart attack over time.

Exercise-based rehabilitation is a first-line intervention. Movement helps blood vessels work better, increases blood flow to the heart, and makes the heart pump more efficiently. It can lower resting heart rate and blood pressure.

Exercise also promotes metabolic health by helping the body use insulin more effectively and improving cholesterol profiles; things that directly reduce cardiovascular risk. It reduces inflammation and helps stabilise plaque so it is less likely to rupture.

With commitment and consistency with exercise, many people also report feeling more confident with movement and less anxious about exertion.

COMMON SYMPTOMS

Chest pain or pressure Shortness of breath Fatigue Reduced exercise tolerance Nausea Sweating Dizziness

ATRIAL FIBRILLATION (AF)

AF the most common sustained heart rhythm problem. It happens when the electrical signals in the atria become rapid and disorganised, leading to an irregular and often fast heartbeat. Because the atria don’t contract effectively, blood flow through the heart is less efficient.

AF comes in different forms. Paroxysmal AF comes and goes, persistent AF lasts longer than seven days, and permanent AF is an ongoing rhythm that is accepted as the long-term pattern.

Exercise is strongly recommended when AF is medically managed and stable. At Citrus, we individualise your program so that movement is a tool for health rather than a source of worry. Over time, physical activity can improve how the heart pumps blood and lower blood pressure and resting heart rate. It also helps with weight management and systemic inflammation; both are linked to reduced AF burden and recurrence risk in some individuals.

CARDIAC SURGERY REHABILITATION

Cardiac surgery covers procedures on the heart or major blood vessels to treat conditions that medication alone can’t fix. This includes operations like pacemaker insertion, valve repair or replacement, coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), and defibrillator implantation.

Rehabilitation after cardiac surgery is essential for recovery and long-term heart health. Evidence shows that structured exercise helps the heart pump more efficiently, increases oxygen delivery to tissues, and supports healthy blood pressure and cardiovascular function.

At Citrus, your program is individualised to respect surgical healing and progresses at a pace that suits you. Movement becomes a tool for recovery, confidence, and long-term cardiovascular health.

COMMON SYMPTOMS

Significant fatigue Reduced aerobic capacity Shortness of breath Chest or incision discomfort Muscle weakness and deconditioning Sleep disturbances Brain fog Lightheadedness
