Metabolic Conditions

overview

We help you navigate metabolic health so you can stay engaged in the moments and activities you care about.

Metabolic conditions influence how the body processes energy, like an engine that isn’t running efficiently. This can affect strength, stamina, and long-term health. At Citrus, we use evidence-based exercise and dietetics to help things run more smoothly.

Metabolic Health Conditions and Symptoms

DIABETES

Diabetes is a metabolic condition where blood glucose levels stay higher than they should because the body doesn’t make enough insulin, can’t use it properly (insulin resistance), or both.

There are three main types. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition where the body stops producing insulin. Type 2 diabetes involves insulin resistance and a gradual drop in insulin production over time. Gestational diabetes develops during pregnancy and affects how the body handles glucose.

Exercise is key. It improves insulin sensitivity, helps muscles use glucose more efficiently, and can lower fasting glucose and HbA1c. Regular physical activity also supports blood pressure, heart health, and weight management; all important for long-term diabetes care.

COMMON SYMPTOMS

Fatigue low energy Blurred vision Slow wound healing Recurrent infections

POLYCYSTIC OVARY SYNDROME (PCOS)

PCOS is a hormonal and metabolic condition that affects hormone balance and insulin resistance. Periods may be irregular or absent, and there may be higher levels of androgens (male-type hormones, like testosterone, that everyone has in small amounts).

Exercise interventions can support better blood sugar control, metabolic health and hormone regulation over time. It can also reduce inflammation and enhance mood and energy.

Because everyone presents differently, both hormonally and in their symptoms, we always individualise your program.

COMMON SYMPTOMS

Insulin resistance Weight gain Irregular ovulation or periods Acne Excess hair growth Thinning of hair on scalp

METABOLIC SYNDROME

Metabolic syndrome is a term used when three or more of the following health risk factors show up: increased waist circumference, high fasting blood glucose, high blood pressure, high triglycerides, or low HDL cholesterol. When these cluster, they raise the risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease. The good news is that these markers are very responsive to exercise!

COMMON SYMPTOMS

Increased abdominal fat Fatigue low energy Elevated blood pressure Elevated fasting glucose Brain fog Poor exercise tolerance Signs of insulin resistance

HYPOTHYROIDISM

Hypothyroidism is when the thyroid doesn’t produce enough thyroid hormones (T3 and T4). Because thyroid hormones help regulate metabolism, low levels can leave you feeling tired and sluggish.

Structured exercise supports metabolism, energy levels, insulin function, and muscle preservation. It reduces cardiovascular risk, which can be higher in untreated hypothyroidism. You may also feel lighter in mood and sharper in thinking, helping counter the “slowed down” feeling.

COMMON SYMPTOMS

Fatigue Brain fog Weight gain Cold intolerance Constipation Dry skin or thinning hair Depression or low mood Slowed heart rate Irregular or heavy periods

HYPERTHYROIDISM

Hyperthyroidism is when the thyroid produces excessive thyroid hormones (T3 and T4), accelerating metabolism. The body moves into overdrive, appetite increases, heart rate climbs, and heat intolerance increases.

Exercise, when appropriately dosed, helps manage muscle weakness, support bone density (as excess thyroid hormone can accelerate bone loss), improve cardiovascular fitness, and regulate mood. The aim is controlled, structured training that stabilises rather than overstimulates.

COMMON SYMPTOMS

Weight loss Increased appetite Heat intolerance Excessive sweating Heart palpitations Rapid resting heart rate Elevated blood pressure Anxiety Irritability Tremors Difficulty sleeping Muscle weakness

NON-FATTY LIVER DISEASE

This is a chronic liver condition characterised by excess fat in the liver in individuals who consume little to no alcohol.

Regular movement is essential. Evidence shows it reduces intrahepatic fat (fat inside liver cells) even without major weight loss, improves insulin sensitivity, and decreases abdominal fat. It also lowers systemic inflammation and supports liver function to slow progression toward fibrosis.

Beyond the liver, exercise enhances mitochondrial and metabolic function and reduces cardiovascular risk; important because heart disease is the leading cause of death in this condition.

COMMON SYMPTOMS

Persistent fatigue Right upper abdominal discomfort Elevated liver enzymes Enlarged liver on ultrasound

OBESITY

Obesity is a chronic, multifactorial condition characterised by excess body fat. Exercise and lifestyle change deliver meaningful benefits, even without large changes on the scales.

Physical activity positively impacts insulin sensitivity, metabolic rate, blood pressure, cholesterol, and cardiovascular fitness. It helps preserve lean muscle mass so weight loss happens in a way that doesn’t harm strength and function. Beyond the numbers, it helps regulate appetite and many people also notice greater mood and confidence. Altogether, these changes set you up for long-term health and wellbeing.

COMMON SYMPTOMS

Increased abdominal fat Shortness of breath with exertion Reduced exercise tolerance Joint pain Fatigue Poor sleep quality Snoring or sleep apnoea Reduced mobility
